When your conscience charges you, what do you do then?
Luther:
Your conscience makes you feel guilty for what you have done. It lets your relationship with God depend on that feeling. And we have to unlearn that! Not because of our own deeds, but because of the work of Christ is it, after all, good between God and us. When your conscience charges you, you have to believe in Christ. Believe that all is still well between you and God in spite of your deeds, because of His work.
That is Christian freedom; the freedom of the conscience. Not that there are no good works that have to be done, but that we no longer trust in them because of our justification by God.
